SpaceX's Capital Expenditures and Future Funding Needs Raise Concerns for Investors

Key takeaways

  • SpaceX may need up to $325 billion in additional capital raises over the next 18-24 months
  • SpaceX reported total capital expenditures of $18.4 billion in Q2, significantly above analyst estimates

SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, is expected to see significant capital expenditures and potential capital raises in the coming months as it expands its operations. KeyBanc analyst Michael Leshock predicts SpaceX may need up to $325 billion over the next 18-24 months to fund this growth.

In his recent note, Leshock stated that the cost of deploying incremental AI compute capacity is increasing and could require a very realistic level of investment to achieve SpaceX's planned levels of compute. With a current cash balance of around $100 billion, SpaceX's free cash flow burn rate, and the magnitude of its planned spending, capital raises are expected.

SpaceX reported total capital expenditures of $18.4 billion in the second quarter, significantly above analyst estimates of around $6 billion. The company did not provide specific 2026 guidance.

Despite these concerns, Wall Street remains bullish on SpaceX. About 80% of sell-side analysts rate SpaceX a Buy or Strong Buy, according to Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data.

BofA analyst Ronald Epstein noted in a note that while the stock is negatively impacted by elevated capex expectations and questions about monetizing capabilities through AI and Starlink Mobile, he remains more positive about SpaceX's positioning across its key markets following 2Q. The upcoming launch of SpaceX's Starship is expected to be a significant milestone towards achieving full and rapid reusability.

Takeaways: SpaceX may need up to $325 billion in additional capital raises over the next 18-24 months; SpaceX reported total capital expenditures of $18.4 billion in Q2, significantly above analyst estimates; Wall Street remains bullish on SpaceX with 80% of sell-side analysts rating it a Buy or Strong Buy.
