Paramount's Warner Bros. Acquisition Faces 25% Odds of Failure, According to Prediction Markets

Key takeaways
- The odds of Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery are currently at 25% according to prediction markets
- The lawsuit by 12 state attorneys general has increased the chances of the merger's failure
- If the deal doesn't close by September 30, Paramount will owe quarterly payments to Warner Bros. shareholders
Prediction market traders on platforms Kalshi and Polymarket have indicated that there is a 25% chance that Paramount's bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery may not be successful by July 2027. The odds were higher before a lawsuit filed by 12 state attorneys general in mid-July, which has increased the likelihood of the merger's failure. Before the lawsuit, the chances of success were over 80%.
Traders on Kalshi currently estimate a 74% probability that Paramount will acquire Warner Bros., while Polymarket puts the odds at 23%. The merger's termination date is March 4, 2027, but it can be extended to June 4 if only regulatory obstacles remain. If the deal doesn't close by September 30, Paramount will owe quarterly payments to Warner Bros. shareholders.
Last week, the Directors Guild of America and International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees wrote a letter urging California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Paramount CEO David Ellison to negotiate a solution or push for an earlier trial date to avoid prolonged uncertainty.
