Micron Stock Surges Past $1,000 Amid Strong Demand and Hyperscaler Buildouts

Key takeaways

  • Micron stock has surged past $1,000
  • Strong demand from hyperscalers is driving the growth
  • JPMorgan strategist predicts memory chip crisis will last for at least two years

The shares of Micron (MU), a leading memory chip manufacturer, have surged past the psychologically significant $1,000 mark in premarket trading on Monday. This is the first time since July 6 that the stock has traded at or above this price, according to Yahoo Finance AlphaSpace data. After losing 25% from July 6 through July 29 due to broader pullbacks in momentum AI names over valuation concerns, Micron's stock has rallied by 36%.

The strong demand from hyperscalers is a key factor driving the stock's growth. Micron's high-bandwidth memory (HBM) modules, particularly HBM3E and HBM4, are seeing brisk demand as they are essential hardware components alongside Nvidia and AMD AI graphics accelerators.

JPMorgan strategist Jay Kwon predicts that the memory chip crisis, which is driving up prices for Micron products, will persist for at least two years. He attributes this to a higher memory total addressable market driven by both pricing and volume, as well as a persistent shortage of supply (S-D).

At an industry event earlier this month, Micron expressed increased demand since its last earnings report in June. KeyBanc analyst John Vinh noted that Micron cannot meet half of DC customer demand in many cases due to the strong demand.

'Micron now sees demand strength to drive tighter conditions in 2027 vs. 2026 after previously indicating that tightness would persist beyond 2027,' Vinh added.
