Dohrn Cuts Fleet Insurance Costs by 20% Using AI Cameras

Key takeaways

  • Dohrn reduced fleet accidents by nearly 20% using AI cameras
  • The decision to implement AI cameras was driven by rising insurance costs
  • Dohrn started using Samsara's technology in 2016 for compliance purposes

A Midwest LTL carrier, Dohrn, has reduced its fleet accidents by nearly 20% since converting to dual-facing event recorders equipped with AI cameras about a year ago. The company, which is a subsidiary of Pitt Ohio Transportation Group, runs approximately 25 terminals and operates around 1,100 drivers, 900 trucks, and 1,800 trailers. Robert Howard, president and CEO of Dohrn, stated that the decision to implement AI cameras was driven by the carrier itself due to rising insurance costs. The company started using Samsara's technology in 2016 for compliance purposes but found that it significantly improved their operations beyond the ELD mandate. Dual-facing cameras were initially a harder sell, but results from outward-facing rollout eventually convinced Dohrn to upgrade across the full fleet about a year ago.
