Brazil's economy expanded by a modest rate in the second quarter, according to data from the country's central bank index. The growth is a positive sign for the South American nation, which has been grappling with economic challenges in recent years.

The central bank's IPCA-LA index, which measures inflation, showed a 0.32% increase in June compared to May. This follows a 0.45% rise in May and a 0.28% increase in April.

Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto commented on the data, stating that 'the economy is recovering gradually.' He added that the bank would continue its efforts to maintain price stability while supporting economic growth.

The second-quarter growth comes after Brazil's economy contracted by 4.1% in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The country has since been recovering, with a 5.3% expansion in 2021.
