Taiwan Semiconductor Emerges as Clear Winner in $595 Billion Cloud Computing Spree

Taiwan Semiconductor Emerges as Clear Winner in $595 Billion Cloud Computing Spree

Key takeaways

  • Tech giants are investing $595 billion in cloud computing this year
  • Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft face capacity constraints
  • TSMC is the leading logic chip manufacturer and set to benefit from increased spending

Three tech giants - Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft - are investing heavily in cloud computing this year, with combined capital expenditures of nearly $600 billion. This massive spending underscores the importance of cloud services to these companies.

The surge in revenues for cloud computing is driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) trend, as most companies lack the necessary in-house capacity to run their AI models and applications. Cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud benefit from this demand.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has stated that there will not be enough capacity to meet demand by 2026, with contracts for capacity in 2028 already appearing. This suggests similar challenges for Google Cloud and Azure as well.

In the past quarter, all three cloud computing divisions posted impressive growth rates, necessitating significant reinvestment. The leading logic chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is set to benefit most from this spending spree due to its near-monopoly in manufacturing the chips needed for data centers.

With AI demand expected to continue through the end of the decade and TSMC's shares down around 10% from their all-time high, now could be an opportune time to invest in TSMC.
